Two westbound lanes of Veterans Memorial Boulevard at Severn Avenue will close nightly this week as work to improve drainage in the busy retail corridor continues.Councilmember Jennifer Van Vranken said the lanes will close at 9 p.m. starting Sunday so crews can connect new 5-foot-wide culverts laid under Severn from West Esplanade to the Veterans Canal. “We’re going to get that work done at night,” Van Vranken said. “If all goes well and the weather doesn’t delay us too much, the crossing at Veterans should be done by Friday morning of this week, the 14th.”Vranken said the cut in Veterans will be backfilled by 6 a.m. so that traffic can resume. She said the complete repair of Veterans will be done later in the project. The $11.6 million Severn Drainage Improvement Project is in the hands of contractor Command Construction LLC and engineer ECM Consultants LLC. It calls for repaving roads, adding a protected bike lane on Severn, landscaping, brick sidewalks and new drainage lines. Construction will pause from Nov. 19 to Feb. 16 for the holiday shopping and Carnival seasons. The project is set to be complete Sept. 26, 2021.
