Vehicles, visions and views from Auto China 2020

It was just days before the March 3 start of the Geneva Motor Show when the show was forced into cancellation by the Switzerland Federal Council’s decision to ban large events due to the heightening threat of COVID-19. The Geneva show was among the first major dominoes to fall in the series of lockdowns and cancelations that have disrupted the Western world ever since.

While North American shows in New York and Detroit canceled outright for 2020, Auto China (Beijing Motor Show) merely postponed, becoming the first international auto show of the post-corona era when it took place between September 26 and October 5. The feel and circumstances of the show were quite different from past events, but the event still brought plenty of wild concept cars, cutting-edge technology and forward-looking design.

Some highlights follow below …

Auto racing roundup: Tennessee driver’s bid to repeat as IndyCar champ gains hope with win

MADISON, Ill. — Josef Newgarden raced to his second IndyCar victory of the season Sunday, holding off rookie Pato O’Ward before the event at World Wide Technology Raceway finished under caution — one week after Takuma Sato won the Indianapolis 500 in the same fashion.

In the second of two weekend races at the short oval just outside of St. Louis, it was Sato who brought out the caution with four laps remaining when he hit the wall. With no time for a restart, O’Ward was denied a chance to challenge the reigning series champion for the win.

Newgarden, in a Chevrolet for Team Penske, won for the 16th time in his career, and the Hendersonville, Tennessee, native closed the gap on championship race leader Scott Dixon — who won Saturday — in the season points standings.

Dixon has won four of IndyCar’s nine races so far this season.

Fuelled by Volvo, China’s Geely Seeks Launchpad to Enter Auto Giant Orbit | Top News

By Yilei Sun and Brenda Goh

TAIZHOU, China/SHANGHAI (Reuters) – Chinese carmaker Geely plans to use a platform developed with input from Volvo to build new models in Malaysia for its partly owned Proton brand, a strategy that shows how it aims to accelerate its push to become China’s first global auto giant.

The yet-to-be-finalised plans for Proton are just one strand of a Geely project to revamp factories at home and abroad using joint platforms it has been perfecting with Volvo since 2013. Geely bought the Swedish brand 10 years ago for $1.8 billion – a deal that raised its international profile and sent shockwaves through the global auto trade.

Senior Geely officials and engineers told Reuters that a project dubbed Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) will allow them to develop, design and build different types of compact cars with similar mechanical layout faster than before – and at lower

Auto racing roundup: Cindric stays hot with win on Daytona road course | Ap

“Money,” Andretti said after posting a four-lap average of 231.351 mph.

The top nine drivers advance to a Sunday shootout that determines the first three starting rows for the Aug. 23 Indianapolis 500. Honda drivers claimed eight of those positions after all 33 cars had made a qualifying attempt.

Chevrolet has struggled with speed since Friday’s boost in horsepower, and the Andretti group established its fleet the fastest at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. But straight speed isn’t enough as qualifying requires drivers to string together four consistent laps in varying conditions — some drew early qualifying slots in cooler temperatures while others went out after it had climbed to 85 degrees.

It was believed drivers qualifying in the warmer temperatures would struggle, but Andretti disproved the theory when he went out 28th.

He was the only driver to crack 232 mph on a lap. Andretti leapfrogged teammates Ryan Hunter-Reay, Alexander Rossi

Auto racing roundup: Dillon sidelined by positive COVID-19 test

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — NASCAR driver Austin Dillon tested positive for COVID-19 and will not compete in Sunday’s Cup Series race at Daytona International Speedway’s road course.

Richard Childress Racing said Dillon tested positive Saturday morning. He experienced mild symptoms and sought a test on his own. He is now self-quarantining from the team. His wife and newborn son remain healthy and symptom-free, the team added.

Kaz Grala will drive the No. 3 Chevrolet on Sunday.

Dillon is the third Cup Series drive to test positive for the coronavirus, joining seven-time champion Jimmie Johnson and part-timer Brendan Gaughan. Johnson missed just one race.

Dillon has already qualified for the playoffs by winning at Texas last month.

According to NASCAR’s latest COVID-19 protocols, Dillon may return to racing activities after he receives two negative test results taken at least 24 hours apart. He also may return 10 days after his first
