FIA cancels remaining 2020 historic championships due to COVID-19 – Historics

The FIA has decided to cancel all its remaining historic motor sport championships for 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic continues across European countries.

The 2020 editions of the FIA European Historic Sporting Rally Championship, FIA Masters Historic Formula One and Sports Car Championships, as well as FIA Historic Formula 3 European Cup, have all been cancelled.

“The F3 Cup was planned to be a one-off event at the Zandvoort Historic GP (September 4-6) while the other three championships all had a planned calendar of rounds over the next three months.

Today’s FIA statement said: “The direct consequences of the COVID-19 situation are affecting the historic racing community as the ever-expanding travel restrictions are preventing drivers, the majority of whom are amateurs, from travelling abroad.

“This has meant that the international status of certain events is becoming less relevant from a pure sporting point of view, while for the organisers, the conditions for setting up historic events that bring together different national and international grids are getting more complex.

“Furthermore, specifically in rally, the recent cancellation of the Rallye International du Valais has brought the number of remaining rounds (three) below the minimum set by the Championship Sporting Regulations to grant titles.

“The Historic Motor Sport Commission (HMSC) Members and all associated organisers will move their focus to 2021.”

While the FIA championships have been cancelled, individual events that included championship rounds may still be going ahead.
