Cost Effective Material Application & Design

EU emission regulations have forced the automotive industry to adopt lightweighting strategies through material selection and design. There has been an industry focus on body in white lightweighting through the use of innovative materials, however, with manufacturing costs proving difficult to swallow, OEM’s are exploring other options to reduce weight and meet CO2 emission requirements.

With this in mind, the Automotive Lightweight Interiors Congress has been engineered to explore the opportunities for lightweighting by adopting material and design strategies within the interior components. With emerging consumer trends such as infotainment, noise reduction, luxury textiles and electronic air conditioning, interior lightweighting strategies face the challenge of meeting customer expectations, safety standards whilst being financially viable.

KEY THEMES TO BE COVERED:

  • OEM STRATEGIES: How OEMs Are Balancing Costs, Carbon Emissions And Customer Expectations To Forge A Successful Interior Lightweighting Strategy
  • COST-DRIVEN SUPPLY CHAINS: Developing Partnership Strategies

Case Study:  BMW Motorrad Motorsport Super Bike

AEC-Q100 qualified MRAM memory from Everspin Technologies is helping BMW optimize performance of their 1000 RR Motorrad Motorsport Super Bike that made its international competition debut in 2009.

BMW Motorrad RSM5 Engine Control Unit for the Motorsport Super Bike

In trials run prior to each competition, sensor data for fuel injection, ignition, braking and acceleration are measured and recorded in MRAM.  Working from these data, the RSM5 engine control unit (ECU) can fine tune the bike to run at peak performance for the individual rider, specific track and exact race conditions that day.

Selecting an Everspin MRAM for the RSM5

For critical data storage in the RSM5 engine control unit, BMW Motorsport selected Everspin’s MR2A16B Parallel Interface 4Mb MRAM.  Used in the AEC-Q100 Grade 1 qualified option, the MR2A16B was considered rugged enough to operate within the very high temperature environments encountered in

Ultralight bicycle touring

Books. No books! Paper is extremely heavy with respect to its usefulness. Read your tourist guide before the trip and leave it at home. The only thing that I need from a guidebook on the trip are maps of towns. I photocopy these or tear them off the guide – there is no place for sentimentality here. On a long trip it is sometimes nice to have something to read. When this mood hits me, I stay a day or two in some hostel where they have books to lend.

Digital cameras. I’m not an expert in digital photography and am a classical fan myself, but from the volume/weight point of view I’d reccommend the use of digital cameras. Old style SLR film cameras are 3-6 times heavier than digital ones. The spare batteries/charger that you’ll need for digital cameras are in the weight class of spare films for

Transportation Preschool Printables – Preschool Mom

This page is filled with printable resources with a transportation theme.  We’ve got some great coloring pages, wordwall cards, cut and paste activities, bingo games, and more.  One of my children’s favorite books is called “I Stink” and it takes them through the daily routine of a garbage truck!  It’s filled with tons of silliness and I would highly recommend this book during your Transportation unit.

Serious Riders, Your Bicycle Seat May Affect Your Love Life

In women, Dr. Goldstein said, the same arteries and nerves engorge the clitoris during sexual intercourse. Women cyclists have not been studied as much, he added, but they probably suffer the same injuries.

Researchers are using a variety of methods to study the compression caused by different saddles. One method involves draping a special pad with 900 pressure sensors over the saddle. The distribution of the rider’s weight is then registered on a computer. In another technique, sensors are placed on the rider’s penis to measure oxygen flowing through arteries beneath the skin. Blood flow is detected by other sensors that send a “swoosh” sound to a Doppler machine.

The research shows that when riders sit on a classic saddle with a teardrop shape and a long nose, a quarter of their body weight rests on the nose, putting pressure on the perineum. The amount of oxygen reaching the penis
