Algarve to make MotoGP debut as 2020 season finale

The Algarve circuit in Portugal has been confirmed as the final round of the 2020 MotoGP season, with the track hoping to be able to host fans.

Last week MotoGP promoters Dorna Sports announced the three remaining flyaway races on the provisional schedule in Malaysia, Thailand and Argentina had been cancelled for 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, but that a 14th round would be added in Europe.

Autosport understood at the time that the race would be the return of the Portuguese Grand Prix, with the Algarve circuit at Portimao to be the venue.

On Monday MotoGP has now confirmed this, with the circuit hoping to have 30,000 fans at the season finale on 20-22 November.

MotoGP Czech Grand Prix winner Brad Binder says his dream of scoring a premier class victory coming in just his third race is “scary”.

Binder stunned on Sunday at Brno by charging to the front of the Czech GP on lap 13 to dominate by 5.2 seconds to score his and KTM’s first MotoGP victory.

The MotoGP rookie showed great pace during practice and qualifying for the two Jerez races last month, but two mistakes ruled him out of possible podium contention.

Now the first rookie winner since Marc Marquez in 2013, Binder was left stunned by the result.

WRC winner Ostberg to make RX debut in electric Citroen – World Rallycross

Citroen works rally driver Mads Ostberg will make his rallycross debut in the Holjes World Rallycross Championship season opener on 22-23 August, racing in the new electric Projekt E category.

Ostberg, whose sole outright World Rally Championship victory came on Rally Portugal in 2012, has been contesting the WRC-2 division with Citroen this year and won both the two season-opening events in Monte Carlo and Sweden in a works C3 R5.

The Norwegian will drive a Citroen C3 ERX, developed by Manfred Stohl’s STARD concern using the French marque’s C3 R5 rolling chassis, mated to the ‘Revelution’ 450kW electric powertrain used by all cars in Projekt E and also developed by Stohl’s company.

Ex-BMW driver Blomqvist set for Le Mans debut with Taiwanese Ferrari squad – WEC

Former factory BMW driver Tom Blomqvist will make his Le Mans 24 Hours debut next month with the HubAuto Corsa team in the GTE Am class.

Blomqvist will be joined by HubAuto Corsa regular Marcos Gomes and team owner Morris Chen at the wheel of a Ferrari 488 GTE, effectively replacing Supercars enduro driver Tim Slade in the team’s line-up.

The 26-year-old has been competing in the IMSA SportsCar Championship for the last two years, but announced his split with BMW at the end of the 2019 season.

He had been due to take part in SRO’s GT World Challenge Europe series this year with the R-Motorsport Aston Martin team, but the Swiss outfit has put all its racing activities on hold until 2021 amid the coronavirus pandemic.

DTM champion Spengler to make Le Mans 24 Hours debut with ByKolles in 2020 – WEC

DTM champion Bruno Spengler will make his debut in the Le Mans 24 Hours this September with the ByKolles LMP1 team.

The Canadian driver becomes the second confirmed driver at the wheel of ByKolles’ ENSO CLM P1/01-Gibson, which originally was not granted an entry for the postponed French classic before moving up from the reserve list, after Tom Dillmann.

Spengler, who now races for BMW in the IMSA SportsCar Championship after losing his DTM seat at the end of last year, got his first taste of the car during the team’s roll-out at the Nurburgring back in May.

He’ll get further mileage under his belt during an upcoming test at Paul Ricard before contesting the World Endurance Championship round at Spa in August prior to Le Mans.
